We can suffer from more severe stress occasionally, like the death of a pet or a loved one. This type of stress is severe but tolerable because it decreases over time.
But childhood trauma, ACEs, cause a significant type of stress that can impact the way a growing child’s body and brain is developed. This type of ongoing stress is severe and frequent and is called Toxic Stress.
Toxic Stress
By changing our brains and our bodies, toxic stress can increase our risk to many types of illness like cancer, cardiovascular disease, and asthma. It can make life more challenging while we are children and even as adults. Experiencing this ongoing severe stress can impact the way we interact with other people, how well we do in school or at the workplace, and the health of our relationships throughout life.
