Positive Childhood Experiences can offset ACEs

Watch this amazing 1 minute video about the Importance of Healthy Relationships

"The more healthy relationships a child has, the more likely he will be to recover from trauma and thrive."

Child Psychiatrist and Trauma Expert Bruce D. Perry

Providing a loving and supportive home for children...

...starts them on a healthy path to adulthood.

Positive Childhood Experiences (PCE) can prevent ACEs and toxic stress from happening to children in the first place, and can also reduce the impact of ACEs, keeping their brains and bodies on track for healthy development. ACEs are what happened to us. They do not define who we are. Our history — and our future — is not fully written yet. It’s up to us to decide what’s in the next chapter.

Research has found the 7 Positive Childhood Experiences listed below can be protective from the trauma we may have experienced in childhood.

Good, Healthy Relationships are Key. Does your child have these 4 advantages?

  1. Who could be a positive role model for your child?
  2. Does your child have supportive friends?
  3. What can you do to help your child have good relationships?
  4. What school activities might your child enjoy?

Talking about feelings

It's also really important to talk about how we feel. When we tell others how we feel, it helps us understand and process past experiences. However, we should only talk about tough stuff when people are ready, and not force a conversation.

How we talk about feelings matters a lot too. Brené Brown talks about understanding and talking to someone who's having a hard time. You can watch her video about understanding feelings here.  Brené Brown on Empathy

We Can Prevent ACEs

ACEs are traumatic for children, but the good news is we can do something about them.  Glenn CARES is working to help adults in our community address their own ACEs and prevent them for their children and grandchildren, breaking generational cycles.  Watch the video below for ideas on how together we can take action and create a healthier, healing community.
